The Biomedical Sciences Research Center “Alexander Fleming” (BSRC Fleming) invites the submission of applications for PhD students and Postdoctoral Researchers to participate in the implementation of the project entitled “Boosting Bio-Innovation and Bio-Entrepreneurship by Establishing Excellence in Biomolecular Engineering and Synthetic Biology” (Acronym: Boost4Bio, GA: 101087471) funded by the call HORIZON-WIDERA-2022-TALENTS-01 – ERA Chair of the Horizon Europe Program. The project is coordinated by the ERA Chair Holder and Director of the Institute for Bio-innovation, Dr Georgios Skretas (https://www.fleming.gr/research/ibi).
BSRC Fleming is the top-ranked Greek non-profit research organization focusing on scientific and technological excellence, innovation and training in the Biomedical Sciences. BSRC Fleming has gained international recognition for its pioneering research towards understanding the molecular and cellular basis of human diseases, such as autoimmune disorders, cancer, neurodegenerative conditions, osteoporosis, pulmonary fibrosis and others, and the development of new approaches for their diagnosis and treatment. The Centre has achieved top performance indicators of academic and research excellence.
BSRC Fleming has recently established the new Institute for Bio-Innovation with a mission to advance basic research discoveries towards innovation in the areas of biotechnology and drug discovery and convert them to tangible outcomes for the economy and the society. Furthermore, BSRC Fleming has planned the establishment of the national R&I infrastructure “Biotechnopolis”, the first integrated Biotechnology hub in Greece and the wider region, to foster the development of innovative biomedical, biotechnological and pharmaceutical products and technologies through the creation of a fertile environment offering access to excellent research, high-end infrastructures and a culture of entrepreneurship close to academia. The goal of the Boost4Bio project is to establish a new excellent Research Team in Biomolecular Engineering & Synthetic Biology at BSRC Fleming, promote the integration of basic and applied research, boost bio-innovation and bio-entrepreneurship at the Center, and lead the establishment of “Biotechnopolis”. Boost4Bio will have a major impact on the promotion of excellence in biomedical research, training and innovation in Greece, will support the proper establishment of a new and unique Excellence Unit in Greece and the wider region, and will contribute to the creation of new career prospects for young researchers.
In the framework of Boost4Bio, several young investigators (students and post-doctoral research associates) will be recruited to join the research team of the ERA Chair Holder and participate in cutting-edge research projects in biomolecular engineering and synthetic biology, as well as to be trained in new research approaches and in a variety of complementary skills, such as technology transfer and effective science communication.
