Drug Delivery with Nanoemulsions: Insights from a Recent Review

We are pleased to share a recent review article co-authored by Dr. Maria Chatzidaki, member of the Boost4Bio community, published in the open-access journal Pharmaceutics.

This review highlights recent advancements in the use of nanoemulsions (NEs) as drug delivery systems, emphasizing their multifunctional potential across various administration routes—including oral, (trans)dermal, ocular, nasal, and intra-articular—based on publications from the past five years. The article examines formulation strategies such as rational component selection, surface functionalization, incorporation of permeation enhancers, and targeted delivery approaches. It also explores NE-based delivery systems like gels, along with emerging applications in vaccination and theranostics. Clinical trials further demonstrate the growing interest in this field. By summarizing current developments, the review provides a comprehensive overview of NE-based strategies and their evolving role in efficient therapeutic delivery.

The review, entitled Nanoemulsions as Bioactive Carriers: Composition, Production Methods, and Applications was co-authored by Maria Chatzidaki and Evgenia Mitsou and published in March 2025.

This work offers a valuable resource for researchers working on formulation and drug delivery systems and reflects Boost4Bio’s commitment to promoting knowledge exchange in biotechnology and applied life sciences.
