Kavli Laureate Chad A. Mirkin to Deliver Keynote Lecture in Athens

Internationally acclaimed nanoscientist and inventor Dr. Chad A. Mirkin will visit Athens this September to share his pioneering work that is transforming the fields of diagnostics, drug delivery, and biomedical engineering.

A 2024 Kavli Prize Laureate in Nanoscience – an honor often regarded as equivalent to the Nobel Prize – Dr. Mirkin will deliver a keynote lecture entitled:

“Foundational Tools, Techniques, and Materials as Outputs of the Modern Age of Nanotechnology”

Date: Thursday, 4 September 2025 | 19:00
Venue: Auditorium, Hellenic American Union, Athens

This public lecture will showcase breakthrough technologies that are redefining the diagnosis and treatment of disease through nanotechnology-based innovations.

A Global Leader in Science and Innovation

Dr. Mirkin is Director of the International Institute for Nanotechnology and Professor at Northwestern University (USA). He is globally recognized for inventing Spherical Nucleic Acids (SNAs) and Dip-Pen Nanolithography, a nanofabrication technique recognized by National Geographic as one of the “100 Scientific Discoveries That Changed the World.”

He has authored more than 870 scientific manuscripts and filed over 1,200 patent applications worldwide, with more than 430 issued to date. He is also the founder of multiple technology companies, including Nanosphere, TERA-print, Azul 3D, Flashpoint Therapeutics, and Mattiq.

Dr. Mirkin has received over 250 national and international awards, among them the prestigious King Faisal Prize and the IET Faraday Medal. He served for eight years on the U.S. President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) and is one of the very few scientists to have been elected to all three U.S. National Academies – Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine – as well as the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

In 2024, Dr. Mirkin received the Kavli Prize in Nanoscience alongside Robert Langer (MIT) and Paul Alivisatos (University of Chicago) for their groundbreaking work in integrating nanoscale materials with biological function for biomedical applications.

Hosted by Boost4Bio and BSRC “Alexander Fleming”

We are proud that this high-profile lecture is organized in the framework of Boost4Bio, the ERA Chair initiative led by Dr. Georgios Skretas, Director of the Institute of Bio-innovation at BSRC “Alexander Fleming”.

“Welcoming Dr. Mirkin to Athens is a milestone for the scientific community in Greece” says Dr. Skretas. “His groundbreaking work exemplifies the transformative potential of nanoscience and aligns directly with Boost4Bio’s mission to advance biomedical innovation.”

The event, presented by Dr. Vasiliki Michopoulou — biologist, science journalist, and Boost4Bio Science Communication Manager — is co-organised by Boost4Bio and the Hellenic American Union.
