Call for Applications for Permanent Position of Research Team Leader in Biomolecular Engineering and Synthetic Biology

The Biomedical Sciences Research Center “Alexander Fleming” invites applications for one (1) position of Researcher Grade A at the Institute for Bioinnovation, in the scientific field: “Biomolecular Engineering and Synthetic Biology.”

Job Description and Required Qualifications

Candidates for the Grade A Researcher position are expected to demonstrate:

  • Proven ability to advance research and its applications in new and emerging scientific areas.
  • Experience in coordinating activities across broad domains of research and technological development.
  • Capacity to contribute to the formulation of research and innovation policy, and to the strategic development of research organizations, including through the attraction of external funding.
  • International recognition for contributions to their scientific and technological field of expertise.
  • Demonstrated impact on the dissemination and application of knowledge generated through research.
  • A substantial publication record, including monographs or papers in internationally recognized journals, and/or significant patents.
  • Recognition by peers for their contribution to the advancement of science and technology.

Scientific Field

The scientific field “Biomolecular Engineering and Synthetic Biology” encompasses the study, design, modification, and application of biomolecules, as well as the development of new or redesigned biological systems using principles from engineering, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and chemistry.
In particular, it includes:

  • Development of innovative biomolecular engineering methodologies for the redesign of proteins, enzymes, and molecular interactions.
  • Construction of synthetic genetic circuits, metabolic pathways, and novel biological platforms.
  • Application of advanced synthetic biology tools to understand and manipulate molecular processes related to human health and disease.
  • Utilization of the above for the development of biotechnological, biomedical, and pharmaceutical applications, including diagnostics, therapeutics, pharmaceutical innovation, biomaterials, and biofuels.

Candidate Profile

The position requires a strong and internationally recognized research record with a clear focus on bioinnovation. Candidates should possess specialized expertise in biomolecular engineering and synthetic biology, including advanced methods for protein (re)design, genome modification, development of synthetic biology tools, and the analysis and engineering of complex biological systems. A proven ability to attract competitive external funding from national and international sources will be considered a particularly desirable qualification.

Additional Requirements

  • Greek male candidates must have fulfilled or been legally exempted from their military service obligations.
  • Fluency in the Greek language is required to a degree that enables effective daily oral and written communication, as well as the preparation of research proposals for Greek funding agencies.
  • For non-Greek candidates, Greek language proficiency must be demonstrated through relevant certification from accredited institutions and will be further assessed during the interview process.
